The concept behind Susty came from a simple yet transformative idea that shifting our consumption habits is the single greatest behavior change we can make to have an impact on the environment and the lives of others.
Each time we make a purchase, we send a signal to the world about our values, and the sum of those signals form our economy. The status quo levels of consumption and mechanisms of production are having an adverse impact on the planet and its inhabitants—from labor practices that exploit workers, to production practices that have devastating impacts on the environment, to the often marginalized people groups that are most adversely impacted by these behaviors—we know it is up to all of us to find better ways to produce and consume.
Frustrated with a lack of organized information to help us make informed purchasing decisions, and identifying this as a likely sticking point for many like-minded individuals, we launched on a journey to explore how to help people do good by improving how they interact with goods. We’re seeing solutions start to rise in segments.
We are inspired by purpose-driven companies working to ensure that their products bring dignity to those that consume them, as well as those that produce them.
We are also moved by the development of governing structures like B Corporations that are increasing transparency and recognizing the need for business to strive for positive impact not just for shareholders, but for all stakeholders. These movements have renewed our confidence in the belief that if we can bring together companies producing things right, with people that are empowered with the right information, we’ll make meaningful strides on our journey to a more fair and just world. With Susty, we aim to do just that.
It’s up to us, who know the world needs to change, to begin to practice being different. Conventional wisdom for years has told us that scale matters, money is the key driver in any economy, and uninhibited growth is good. At Susty, we’re after scaling solutions that increase sustainability, acknowledging that human dignity is the key component to every just economy, and the best kind of growth is when people and the planet get to grow and thrive together. “Business as usual” falls short of that vision; it's time to reimagine consumption as a tool to generate greater equity and better livelihoods, for everyone.
